Industry Issue:Deliver "Continuous Joint Process" Required to Support Seasonal Operational and Retail Packaging Needs

Challenge :

Harry & David and developed a relationship that began with a unique understanding of Harry & David's history. The project focus was to deliver a packaging solutions that would protect their brand image, and ensure continued leadership in the gifting and entertainment business.

Harry & David had used pre-formed set-up boxes for their "Tower of Treats" with success for many years. But, as volume grew, they needed a package design that would not require an excessive amount of space for storage, and related labor to move the package through the fulfillment process.

Solution :

Malnove developed our Stackrite Tray and Lid Forming Technology which included the design of a web cornered "flat pack" paperboard folding carton that could be formed "on demand" at Harry & David's Medford, Oregon Plant. After close collaboration, design review and testing, we found that this new package platform protected the product while delivering an extremely square design that would stack and distribute effectively for the "Tower of Treats" brand.

Malnove designed and installed (20) Stackrite Tray and Lid forming machines that were equipped to form gift box bases and lids simultaneously. Our Packaging Systems team also developed a system to wrap and secure a ribbon and bow around each "Tower of Treats".

Benefit:

  • Fully automated package design supported an Historical Product Branding standard
  • Significantly less storage space related to inbound receipt of packaging materials
  • More efficient movement through the fulfillment and packaging process
  • Product protection was never compromised
  • Completed the additional process improvement related to ribbon and bow feeding and application automation
